Our relationship with Iramoko Marae in Whakatāne started in 2018. Pouroto Ngaropo is our Pou Tikanga/Senior Cultural Advisor. 

We have an office located on the marae.

Te Pou Tikanga

Senior cultural advisor

Dr. Pouroto Ngaropo is a revered figure among Māori, affiliates to many iwi from Northland, Waikato, Rotorua, Tauranga, Taranaki to Wellington region. He is our Te Pou Tikanga/Senior Cultural Advisor as well as a member of our board. He is a leader and cultural ambassador for knowledge in mātauranga Māori, kawa and tikanga. In 2019 he received a MNZM for service to Māori and governance; and in 2022 was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Auckland University of Technology (AUT).

Toitoi Manawa

Toitoi Manawa is an advisory group within the organisation that advises and consults on matters relating to cultural practice and competency.

‘Toi’ means pillars, life, energy, knowledge, skill and expertise. ‘Manawa’ is the heart of the organisation. ‘Toitoi Manawa’ symbolises excellence in health and all things; achieving to the best of our ability, successful outcomes, and clear direction within a spirit of unity.

Why is Te Tiriti o Waitangi important to Community Connections?

Te Tiriti o Waitangi is the foundation of true bicultural engagement and genuine partnership.

Understanding Te Tiriti o Waitangi is fundamental to Community Connections’ holistic Mana Waiora approach to disability support.

Te Tiriti o Waitangi is about better disability services and outcomes for our communities. We aspire to have all our decision making premised on Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and all our staff culturally aware of Mana Waiora and how it is infused in all our operations, practices, professional development, and policies.
